Who We Are
Rethink Our Schools is a local organization based in Mid-Missouri dedicated to the idea that all children deserve positive educational environments in which to learn.

a brief position statement
We believe in traditional, classical education and are concerned about the direction our schools have taken, especially in their approach to discipline, classroom management, and behavior modification. We believe that zero-tolerance and other similar policies, such as BIST have led schools to focus a greater and greater amount of their energies and resources on behavior management to the detriment of the learning environment. With an increasing focus on rule following and behavioral management, less and less time is left for actual instruction.  The predictable result is students who are trained to follow simple directions without question, but are unable to think critically and independently.  Ideologically we believe that zero-tolerance is a fundamentally unfair and counter-productive policy that has no place in a just society.  We believe that children need to be encouraged to develop their natural will to learn so they may become lifelong learners.  And we encourage all teachers and administrators to remember that your students, our kids,  will rise to meet your expectations of them, no matter how low those expectations are set.

Our Goals

Our primary purpose is to work to change the direction in which education seems to be heading, especially in the areas of discipline, classroom management, and instructional methods.  To that end, we intend to provide a forum to raise the public’s awareness of the current state of their local schools, and encourage them to take an active role.
